Allopurinol 100mg (Zyloric) is a medication used primarily for the management of gout and certain types of kidney stones. Allopurinol is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor that works by reducing uric acid levels in the blood. Elevated uric acid levels can lead to the formation of crystals in the joints, causing gout attacks and discomfort. By decreasing uric acid production, Zyloric helps prevent gout flares and complications associated with hyperuricemia.

Indications:

Allopurinol 100mg (Zyloric) is indicated for:

  • The treatment of gout and hyperuricemia (high uric acid levels)
  • Prevention of gout attacks and related complications
  • Management of uric acid levels in patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy, which can elevate uric acid due to tumor lysis syndrome

Dosage and Administration:

  • Recommended Dose: The usual starting dose for adults is 100mg to 300mg per day, taken orally. The dose may be adjusted based on uric acid levels and individual patient response.
  • Allopurinol should be taken after meals with a full glass of water to minimize gastrointestinal irritation.
  • Regular monitoring of uric acid levels is necessary to assess treatment effectiveness and adjust dosage as needed.

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to Allopurinol or any of its components
  • Patients with acute gout attacks should not initiate therapy with Allopurinol until the acute attack has resolved
  • Severe liver or kidney dysfunction may require caution and dosage adjustment

Precautions:

  • Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, and dosage adjustments may be necessary.
  • Patients should be advised to stay well-hydrated while on Allopurinol to help prevent kidney stones.
  • Initiating Allopurinol therapy during an acute gout attack may exacerbate symptoms; therefore, it is generally recommended to wait until the attack has resolved.
  • Discontinue use and seek medical attention if a rash or other allergic reaction occurs, as this may indicate a serious condition called Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Side Effects:

Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea or upset stomach
  • Diarrhea
  • Drowsiness
  • Skin rash

Serious side effects (seek medical attention if these occur):

  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing)
  • Liver function abnormalities (jaundice, dark urine)
  • Blood disorders (fever, sore throat, unusual bruising or bleeding)

Drug Interactions:

  • Use caution when combining Allopurinol with medications that affect kidney function or uric acid metabolism, such as azathioprine and mercaptopurine, as Allopurinol can increase their toxicity.
  • Diuretics may increase the risk of developing gout attacks when starting Allopurinol.
  • Warfarin and other anticoagulants may have altered effects when used with Allopurinol; monitoring may be necessary.

Storage:

  • Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Packaging:

  • Allopurinol 100mg (Zyloric) is available in blister packs or bottles, typically containing 10, 28, or 30 tablets.
