Janumet 50mg/1000mg Tablets is a combination medication used to help manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It contains two active ingredients: sitagliptin, a DPP-4 inhibitor that helps regulate insulin levels after meals, and metformin, a biguanide that lowers glucose production in the liver and improves the body’s response to insulin. Together, they help control blood sugar levels, especially after meals.
Indications:
- Used as part of a treatment plan for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet and exercise alone do not provide adequate blood sugar control.
- May be used in patients inadequately controlled on metformin alone or those already treated with a combination of sitagliptin and metformin.
Dosage and Administration:
- Adults: One tablet taken twice daily with meals, or as directed by a healthcare provider.
- The dosage is individualized based on the patient’s current blood glucose levels, renal function, and response to treatment.
- Janumet should always be taken with food to reduce gastrointestinal side effects associated with metformin.
- Swallow the tablets whole with water; do not crush, break, or chew.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to sitagliptin, metformin, or any of the excipients.
- Severe renal impairment (eGFR below 30 mL/min/1.73 m²).
- Metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis.
- Acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, including lactic acidosis.
Precautions:
- Patients with kidney or liver impairment, heart failure, or a history of lactic acidosis should use Janumet with caution and under close medical supervision.
- Regular kidney function monitoring is required while using Janumet.
- Patients should avoid excessive alcohol intake, as it may increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider before using this medication.
