Olmesartan Medoxomil (Olmecip H) is a combination of Olmesartan Medoxomil, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), and Hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic. This combination is prescribed to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Olmesartan helps relax blood vessels, improving blood flow and reducing blood pressure, while Hydrochlorothiazide removes excess salt and water from the body, reducing fluid retention and enhancing blood pressure control.
Indications:
Olmesartan Medoxomil (Olmecip H) is indicated for:
- The treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Lowering the risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes, in patients with elevated blood pressure
- For patients who require a combination therapy to achieve better blood pressure control
Dosage and Administration:
- Recommended Dose: One tablet daily, or as prescribed by a healthcare provider.
- The tablet should be swallowed whole with water, and it can be taken with or without food.
- For best results, it is recommended to take the medication at the same time each day.
- Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor, as doing so may lead to a rapid increase in blood pressure.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to Olmesartan, Hydrochlorothiazide, or any of the excipients in the tablet
- Severe kidney or liver impairment
- Pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, due to the risk of fetal harm
- Anuria (inability to urinate)
- Electrolyte imbalances (such as low potassium or sodium levels)
Precautions:
- Should be used cautiously in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
- Electrolyte levels, including potassium, sodium, and magnesium, should be monitored regularly.
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
- Patients with diabetes or gout should be cautious, as Hydrochlorothiazide can affect blood sugar and uric acid levels.
- Avoid dehydration or excessive loss of body fluids, as this may lead to dangerously low blood pressure.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include:
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Increased urination
- Nausea or upset stomach
- Fatigue
- Muscle cramps or weakness
Serious side effects (require immediate medical attention):
- Severe hypotension (low blood pressure)
- Electrolyte imbalances (symptoms may include irregular heartbeat, weakness, confusion)
- Allergic reactions (rash, swelling of the face, lips, or throat)
- Worsening kidney function
- Vision changes or eye pain (possible signs of increased eye pressure)
Drug Interactions:
- Other blood pressure medications may increase the risk of low blood pressure when taken with Olmesartan Medoxomil.
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may reduce the effectiveness of Olmesartan and increase the risk of kidney problems.
- Potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics may increase potassium levels in the blood.
- Lithium levels can increase when taken with Olmesartan, potentially leading to toxicity.
Storage:
- Store in a cool, dry place, away from moisture and heat.
- Keep out of reach of children.
Packaging:
- Olmecip H tablets are typically available in blister packs containing 10, 28, or 30 tablets.
