Valacyclovir 500mg (Valcivir) Tablets

Valacyclovir 500mg (Valcivir) is an antiviral medication primarily used for the treatment of infections caused by certain viruses, particularly the herpes simplex virus and varicella-zoster virus. Valacyclovir is a prodrug that is rapidly converted into acyclovir in the body, effectively inhibiting viral DNA synthesis. This action helps manage and reduce the severity of viral infections, including genital herpes, cold sores, and shingles.

Indications:

Valacyclovir 500mg (Valcivir) is indicated for:

• Treatment of initial and recurrent episodes of genital herpes in adults.
• Suppressive therapy for recurrent genital herpes to reduce the frequency of outbreaks.
• Treatment of herpes zoster (shingles) in adults.
• Treatment of cold sores (herpes labialis) in adults.
• Reduction of the risk of transmission of genital herpes to uninfected partners.

Dosage and Administration:

• Recommended Dosage for Genital Herpes:
  • Initial Episode: 1,000mg taken twice daily for 7 to 10 days.
  • Recurrent Episodes: 500mg taken twice daily for 3 to 5 days.
• Recommended Dosage for Suppressive Therapy: 500mg taken once daily; the dosage may be increased to 1,000mg once daily for those with frequent recurrences.
• Recommended Dosage for Herpes Zoster (Shingles): 1,000mg taken three times daily for 7 days.
• Recommended Dosage for Cold Sores: 2,000mg taken at the first sign of symptoms, followed by a second dose 12 hours later (maximum of two doses in one day).

Valacyclovir should be taken orally with or without food, and patients are advised to stay well-hydrated during treatment.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to Valacyclovir, Acyclovir, or any of its components.
• Patients with severe renal impairment should use Valacyclovir with caution, and dosage adjustments may be necessary.

Precautions:

• Use with caution in patients with a history of renal impairment, dehydration, or concurrent use of nephrotoxic agents.
• Patients should be informed about the importance of adhering to therapy and the need for safe practices to reduce the risk of transmission of genital herpes.

Serious side effects (seek medical attention if these occur):

• Signs of kidney dysfunction (decreased urination, swelling in the legs or feet)
• Neuropsychiatric events (confusion, hallucinations, agitation)

Drug Interactions:

• Valacyclovir may interact with other medications that affect kidney function. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medications they are taking.
• Probenecid can increase Valacyclovir levels in the blood, requiring careful monitoring and possible dosage adjustments.
